Cacao vs Cocoa

Cacao

Cacao beans are dried, fermented and heated at a low temperature. By heating the bean, the fatty part separates from the rest.

  • More antioxidants
  • Cacao nibs are a great chocolate chip replacement
  • Cacao butter can be used as moisturizer

Cocoa

Harvested the same way as cacao but heated at a high temperature, the final product is much sweeter than cacao.

  • Sweet tasting
  • Better for baking
  • More processed, decreasing antioxidants and nutrients
